How to Answer “Tell Me About Yourself” at Your Next Job Interview

Don’t let, “So tell me about yourself”, be a dreaded question at your next job interview.

The key to successfully answering this question is to plan ahead. This sounds simple enough - you know yourself best. But this shouldn't be an off the cuff response. You don't want to meander or tell your entire life story! Write down some key bullet points - and practice out loud.  Practice and condense.

When asked this question, it's important to keep your answer concise and relevant to the job for which you're interviewing.

Here's a template you can follow:

  • Begin by introducing yourself and briefly mentioning your current position or field of work.

  • Highlight your relevant experience, skills, and achievements that demonstrate your suitability for the job you're interviewing for.

  • Show your passion and enthusiasm for the work you do, and explain why you're interested in this particular role.

  • Finish by summarizing your key strengths and why you believe you're a good fit for the job.

For example, you could say something similar to the below script:

"Thank you. My name is [Your Name], and I currently work as a [Your Current Position]. I have [X years/months] of experience in [relevant field], where I've developed a strong skill set in [list your most relevant skills]. I'm particularly proud of [mention your most impressive achievement] because it demonstrates my ability to [show how you can add value to the job you're applying for].

When I saw the opening for [the job you're applying for], I was excited because [explain what about the job/company/industry interests you]. I think my skills in [list a few specific skills] would be a great fit for this role. I'm really excited about the opportunity to [describe what you're excited to contribute or learn].

On a personal level [now add a sentence or 2 about your personal life/ interests etc].”

In addition to being prepared in your responses, make sure you are professional in your speaking style and presence - whether it is a live or a virtual interview. Arrive early, dress well and make sure your sound/video is working in advance of the interview. Make sure you are professional in your posture, eye contact, smile and presence. Remember to breathe!

It's great to practice the answers to the most common interview questions and be prepared with responses. But you do not want to SOUND memorized - (even if you have memorized your answer.) Practice speaking professionally yet naturally.

Be yourself - but a well practiced version of yourself. Put your best foot forward and land that next job!
